New life style changes necessary to get your body back in the shape nature intended, often fail because we do not handle the changes correctly to make them stick. These things you know you need to change and do will not change your life unless you get them to happen daily "automatically" without conscious effort.
It really wont matter if it is easy or a strain, you will still have difficulty making the change, you are set up to not be into change, since it was traditionally thru history, hazardous to your survival. We get up at a certain time, eat at certain restaurants, wear certain clothes, brush our teeth at a certain stage of getting dressed, and we watch certain TV shows at a certain time simply because that is what we have always done. These are our habits, our daily "automatic" rituals, and we perform them without really thinking about them and they 'control our lives. The trouble with changing these habits is that they preserve the status quo, they keep every thing "flowing" that same old familiar way without any real conscious effort. You have done them for so long they feel so comfortable you are sure they must be "right", it would be unrealistic to expect you to change them.Your survival programming is set up to keep you alive, and to do this nature has it so you automatically tend to continue to do what you have always done, (and survived so far) so you will tend to not have acceptance of any new risks. To keep you on this path, nature has you feel "comfortable" doing what you have always done and uncomfortable doing new actions. After 21 days the new repeated action is deemed okay and made to fell comfortable and the "right thing to do:. The new improved or correct action feels "strange" and you will really have to have a lot of resolve, a lot of memory reminders to force yourself to do it daily without fail. You will need a full quart of will power. This is what makes the changes necessary for dramatic improvement in your life style unlikely to continue more then the one or two times you happen to consciously remember to make that change. If you want to fix your life, you make conscious firm decisions on what needs to be, and will be changed. To make it stick and happen automatically and feel great, natural and comfortable we have to repeat it for at least 21 days. First we must be willing to evaluate and muster the necessary resolve, "this is something I have to do, to replace some of our daily long term rituals with the new more productive "what works" ones. Example:
As a "fat making" person, the best thing you can do is to lower blood sugar peaks because it is these peaks that call up the fat making hormone, insulin to suppress the high sugar. (turns it into fat) so to lower it, it is a good idea to exercise after eating, (or just before) so lets say you make a decision, every day after dinner you are going to develop the habit to get out and go for a brisk walk.. Not only will this new habit help lower your 'after dinner" immediate blood sugar level, and possibility it will get converted to body fat, this will also help you retain muscle mass that has been diminishing as you age, leaving less place for your high blood sugar peaks to go and when exceeded long term they label you s diabetic
It takes a minimum of 21 days of getting up and going for a walk after dinner for the brain to build the kind of links necessary to put this action on automatic. For example, you will find an excuse to justify to yourself, to not do the new "uncomfortable" thing today. Too cold, too windy, my foot hurts, something to get you out of the uncomfortable NEW action,Your old programming wants you to go back to the "comfortable" lets watch TV after dinner. If you have the resolve, and it is too cold, too windy, etc you will drive down to the mall and take your walk inside there. You will find a way. Until you have pulled this new action off for 21 days, it will be outside your "comfort zone", will not feel natural and you will find consciously or unconsciously an excuse not to do it, or just subconsciously on purpose, forget to do it, 100% continuous action is required every day for 21 days to make a new behavior "stick" as an automatic action habit.Any break and your 21 day reform to automatic has to start over. To be sure a new life style "habit" (action) sticks, we suggest practicing a new habit for two months to ensure and to make sure it now feels perfectly comfortable and "not doing" it now feels "uncomfortable". Once it becomes second nature, and on automatic, your new "habit", a life style change will have just "happened". It is what you do, it is just the new all around improved "life works "you". The results will soon show and you will be around for a lot longer then your old life style had in store. Make "New Improved" Life Saving-Extending, Shaping Overall Life Style Changes Stick
